What We Do:

Some of our specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Monitor severe and tropical weather
  • Provide “on-location” support and assistance to local first response agencies
  • Develop local emergency response plans, procedures and guidelines
  • Provide or coordinate mutual aid, and serve as a liaison with the State of Florida Division of Emergency Management and other local Emergency Management agencies in surrounding counties
  • Serve as the liaison and coordinator for municipalities’ request for State and Federal assistance during both pre and post disaster operations
  • Comply with state and federal emergency preparedness and response requirements and standards
  • Conduct Hazardous Materials Analysis of facilities reporting under the Community Right to Know Act
  • Review emergency plans for health care facilities

  • Advise on how to protect yourself and your families or your business
  • Provide information on how you can support your community during a disaster
  • Conduct and coordinate public outreach seminars, workshops and training
  • Conduct local emergency exercises and drills
  • Evacuating our citizens who are in danger and registering those who need special attention or need transportation during a disaster

During emergency situations, such as the threat of a hurricane or the aftermath of a tornado, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) would be activated.  The EOC brings together key agencies into one room to facilitate sheltering of evacuees, law enforcement, fire rescue, public works and many other various agencies.

The EOC has three (3) levels of activation:

  • Level Three (3) is normal day to day operations or monitoring
  • Level Two (2) is a partial activation, where some of the EOC elements are activated
  • Level One (1) is full activation and provides round-the-clock service during and actual or threatening emergency

For additional information, please contact Sumter County Emergency Management at 352- 569-6000.

The Sumter County Emergency Operation Center is certified "Storm Ready" by NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration).
