BRIEF DESCRIPTION
This is a responsible position, which, under direct supervision, performs a wide range of general Communication skills and is an important and vital position with the Communications Division. Receives incoming telephone calls for emergency and non-emergency service, properly records all pertinent information and transfers information to proper radio operator for dispatch.
 
JOB DUTIES
A. Receive and record all 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency telephone requests for law enforcement, fire, and rescue services in unincorporated Sumter County.

B. Receive all requests for law enforcement, fire, and emergency rescue services in unincorporated Sumter County.

C. Maintain all records pertaining to requests for service.

D. Assist dispatchers as necessary, as experience and training allow.

E. Provide callers with requested information whenever possible.

F. Receive requests for Emergency Management Services during assigned hours.

G. Receive and transfer requests for 9-1-1 Emergency Service during assigned hours.

H. Maintain all telephone communications in an efficient, courteous, and professional manner.

I. Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of assigned work area and equipment.

J. Assist in the maintenance of the Communications Center and immediately report all equipment malfunctions and failures.

K. Become familiar with the boundaries of Sumter County and familiar with the proper names, numbers, and locations of roadways, public buildings, hospitals and so forth.

L. Be alert for conditions or situations, which inhibit the efficient operation of Agency or the Communications Center, and make recommendations for solutions.

M. Perform any additional duties that may be required by the Sheriff or through necessity of situations.
 
JOB PREREQUISITES
High School Diploma or GED.

Ability to speak and enunciate the English language clearly.

Normal hearing ability.

Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations, and to remain calm during emergencies.

Ability to maintain records.

Ability to follow instructions with minimal supervision.

Knowledge of geographical features of Sumter County and landmarks. Location and responsibilities of County and State agencies and jurisdictional areas of local law enforcement agencies.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an enclosed area with background noise from radios, telephones, teletype machines and other equipment. Shift work is required, including nights, weekends and holidays. Required to work overtime when necessary, sometimes on short notice. Extensive use of telephones. Subject to possible verbal abuse from callers and frequent exposure to traumatic situations.
