Sheriff Farmers' Accomplishments
It has been an honor to serve as your Sheriff here in Sumter County, I take great pride in the accomplishments of this office. Scroll down to see what we have done so far. With these accomplishments, and a clear vision for the future, we are doing our best to make Sumter County a place you are, and will continue to be, proud to call your home.
- Utilizing grants the overall manpower was increased by 50%
- Utilized seized drug money to:
- Funded two Truancy Deputy positions within the Sumter County School System
- Funded cell phones for each of the public school busses
- Funded leadership camp for 240 Sumter County children
- Funded scholarship programs in the Sumter County School System
- Funded the Aviation Unit and built our helicopter hanger
- Provided maintenance for the Helicopter
- Helped fund the latchkey program for Sumter County Boys and Girls Club
- Sponsor of Red ribbon day for school children
- Provided support for G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education Program)
- Supported S.A.V.E. (Sumter Anti-Violence Education Program)
- Assisted in the Junior Deputy Program
- Funded equipment for the new Environmental Deputy position
- Purchased the Traffic Enforcement Radar Trailer
- Utilizing in house lawyer to save attorney fee's:
- Drug forfeiture cases
- ADA and FMLA Labor issues
- Opened Sheriff's Annex in:
- Croom
- Lake Panasoffkee
- The Villages Annex staffed by volunteers
- Wildwood Annex that houses our Community Service Operation
- Applied for and received the following grants:
- C.O.P.S.
- Agriculture
- Narcotics Task Force Started Sumter's first Aviation unit by tapping into the military surplus program
- Created Community service section which provides:
- Neighborhood watch programs
- Crime prevention programs
- School resource deputy programs
- Community relations programs
- Crimes against elderly programs
- Vial of life program
- Peace of Mind phone line

- Created Community advisory board
- Created weekend and weekday work crew (prisoners that clean up roadways and parks)
- Created Agriculture Deputy/Agriculture Registration program
- Created Environmental Deputy position
- Created Sheriff's Explorer Post
- Created Sumter's first Citizens Academy program
- Provided Stop Sticks in all Sheriff's cars and two for each City Police Department
- Began Golf Cart patrols in Continental Country Club, The Villages, and various public events
- Provided computerized communication equipment for law enforcement and fire
- Computerized the criminal records division including report writing by way of lap top computers in patrol vehicles
- Started Construction of the new Communications Center
- Established an Internet World Wide Web site and home page
- Detention improvements:
- Constructed a fifty bed minimum/medium security dorm to eliminate jail overcrowding
- Improved the booking security within the jail
- Painted wall's and floors using monies paid by housing Federal Prisoners
- secured a telephone security system for the County Jail at no cost to Sumter County
- Secured $80,000 worth of electronic fingerprinting equipment at no cost to Sumter County
- Utilize computerized booking for the Sumter County Jail
- Attained State Accreditation for the Sumter Jail/Detention Center
